Idee und Konzept der Präsentation stammen von Corinna Haese. "Die Kriegsgefangenen waren für die damals nur 100 000 Einwohner Münsters jahrelang ein prägender Faktor ihres Stadtbildes", erläutert die wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft im Stadtmuseum.
Die Münsteraner erlebten die Gefangenen häufig auf deren Arbeitseinsätzen. Vor allem Gefangene aus fernen Ländern sorgten für Aufsehen: "Besondere Faszination übten damals Soldaten aus exotischen Herkunftsländern wie Indien oder Afrika aus", so Dr. Bernd Thier, der als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter das Projekt betreut, zu einer Postkartenansicht.
Andere Fotografien und Postkarten halten gesellige Momente fest. Während der oft jahrelangen Gefangenschaft suchten die Kriegsgefangenen bei Sport, Musik, Theaterspiel oder auch bei der Produktion einer eigenen Lagerzeitung - einige Exemplare werden in der Ausstellung präsentiert - nach Ablenkung und Zeitvertreib. Das Gefühl, trotz ihrer hilflosen Situation etwas Sinnvolles leisten zu können, sollte dazu beitragen, die Lagerzeit besser zu ertragen. Allerdings unterlagen diese Bilder genau wie die schriftlichen Quellen der Zensur und sparen Schreckensbilder aus.
Da noch weiterer Forschungsbedarf besteht, freuen sich die Mitarbeiter des Museums über Einsicht in weiteres Quellenmaterial - Fotos, Postkarten oder Briefe. Auch an Arbeiten, die von den Kriegsgefangenen hergestellt wurden, ist das Stadtmuseum interessiert (Hinweise an Dr. Bernd Thier, Tel. 02 51 / 4 92 - 45 10).
