Zusammen mit Oberbürgermeister Katsuhiro Shiraishi besuchten Stadtplaner und Politiker, Vertreter der Industrie- und Handelskammer, Wissenschaftler und Studierende Münster, Amsterdam und Köln, um sich über Ansätze für eine fahrradfreundliche Verkehrspolitik zu informieren. In Kurume mit seinen 230 000 Einwohnern soll sich das Fahrrad als wichtiges Verkehrsmittel etablieren können. Das Interesse am Fahrrad sei größer als je zuvor, so die japanische Stadt, und beim Rad handele es sich schließlich um ein abgasfreies, wirtschaftliches und gesundheitsförderndes Verkehrsmittel.
Bürgermeisterin Marie-Theres Kastner empfing eine Vertretung der Delegation im Friedenssaal des Rathauses. Anschließend erläuterte Stephan Böhme den münsterschen Ansatz einer stadt- und umweltgerechten Verkehrsplanung. Auf großes Interesse stieß unter anderem die Radstation und ihre Bedeutung bei der Verknüpfung der Verkehrsmittel des Umweltverbundes.
