Die Arbeiten konnten beginnen, nachdem Prüfungen ergeben haben, daß diese Lösung Radfahrern nicht nur mehr Sicherheit auf dem Gievenbecker Weg bringt, sondern auch allen zwingend vorgeschriebenen formalen Anforderungen gerecht wird. Die Straßenverkehrsordnung sieht Schutzstreifen seit der Novellierung im Sepember 1997 vor. Ein Schutzstreifen kann angebracht werden, wenn für den Kraftfahrzeugverkehr eine Mindestbreite bleibt und die Verkehrsbelastung bestimmte Werte nicht überschreitet. Ergebnis der Untersuchung: Beide Voraussetzungen sind erfüllt.
Rund 8200 Kraftfahrzeuge benutzen die Straße pro Tag. Der Anteil des Lkw-Verkehrs ist mit weniger als fünf Prozent niedrig. Er schwankt je nach Tageszeit zwischen 0,8 und 4,4 Prozent im Stundenmittel. Dennoch prüft die Verwaltung in Abstimmung mit der Polizei, ob es sinnvoll ist, diese vergleichsweise geringe Anzahl von großen Fahrzeugen künftig auf eine andere Route zu verweisen. Unabhängig davon werden in Zukunft alle Verkehrsteilnehmer durch Schilder an die Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung von 50 Stundenkilometern erinnert.
Schutzstreifen haben sich an anderen Stellen im Stadtgebiet bewährt, beispielsweise an der Hiltruper Straße und an der Scharnhorststraße. Die Praxis zeigt, daß die Regelung von den Verkehrsteilnehmern tatsächlich akzeptiert wird und sich die Situation verbessert.
